What are moors ?

Moorlands or moors are upland areas with mostly an acidic, low-nutrient and water-logged (soil with alot of water) soil.

Many small mammals and insects live here. Because of the soil's conditions very few species of plants grow there such as heather, grose, willow, bracken and fern. Most moors are formed naturally in coastal areas .

A variety of distinct habitat types are found in different world regions of moorland. In their cold, windy and wet conditions colourful heather plants dominate, growing on the deep peaty layers.
